I had the pleasure this past week of participating in a workshop with David Beckstead. David was recently recognized as one of the top 10 wedding photographers in the world. It was a great experience to shoot with him and a dozen other excellent Denver area photographers. After shooting in several locations on Tuesday, we all headed over to my house for pizza, beer, and conversation. Then each of us was off to process the hundreds of images taken and edit it down to the 20 we thought were the best. On Tuesday we gathered at Grant Oakes' studio to project them so everyone could see and have David offer a critique. Thank you to David for his inspiration and enthusiasm, Grant Oakes for sponsoring and organizing the workshop, and all the wonderful Colorado photographers that participated and are helping to "raise the bar" of wedding photography in the area. Here's a few I showed and didn't show.
Hometown, Vauxhall, N.J., which is about 15 miles west of Times Square. I dislike cheese except on pizza.
First photo published was the cover shot for National Speedsport News of Mark Donahue winning the Trans Am race at Brigehampton Speedway in Long Island. Sold first print in 1976. Vowed I’d never do weddings.
Big time Broncos fan. I’ve been to two Super Bowls. Saw them lose one and win one. I’ve run the NYC Marathon six times. I’ve done Ride the Rockies twice, Pedal the Peaks once.
Go to church regularly and consider myself a Christian. I respect everyone’s religious beliefs.
Never judge what someone thinks is a good picture. I never refuse a photo request, ie table shots or dad pulling his pants pockets inside out. It’s their pictures.
Favorite city besides Denver is Paris, France.
I’m pretty much self taught but have been to a ton of seminars, workshops, and college level photography classes over the years.
Photographers that have influenced me: Roy DeCarava; W. Eugene Smith; Ralph Gibson; Gary Winogrand; Pete Turner;
Helmut Newton; Harry Callahan; Eugene Richards; Elliott Erwitt
